Twitter Explained

Here is a basic review of what twitter is... Twitter is a social networking service that allows members to inform each other about what they are doing and what they think. It allows users to send messages via phone, instant messaging or the Twitter website. Two SMS gateway numbers are available - one for USA, and one UK number for international use. Users can receive updates from other selected users via web, IM, or SMS.

It made its debut in March 2006. Its an example of a microblogging platform.
The Twitter team won the 2007 South by Southwest Web Award. They gave the following playful acceptance speech: "We'd like to thank you in 140 characters or less. And we just did!"

With the growing number of new users, Twitter is experiencing numerous challenges related to its growth. Quoting the Wall Street Journal, "These [social-networking] services elicit mixed feelings in the technology-savvy people who have been their early adopters. Fans say they are a good way to keep in touch with busy friends. But some users are starting to feel 'too' connected, as they grapple with check-in messages at odd hours, higher cellphone bills and the need to tell acquaintances to stop announcing what they're having for dinner."

Thanks for the insight. As an SXSW attendee I was trying to figure out if Twitter had any other significant uses. I'm still on the fence regarding if I want to be THAT connected or not- but its good to have an understanding around twitter friendly mediums.
